Buying computer, DVI, or other electronics cables in a chain store can add hundreds to the cost of new equipment. Save tons of money on computer cables with these tips.

The joy of finding a great deal on a new computer purchase can quickly fade when a store employee begins to point out all of the high priced computer cables that are not included in the purchase price.

Just like HDMI and other home theater cables, computer cables are grossly overpriced at most chain retailers. Savvy shoppers can save tens or even hundreds of dollars by shopping on the Internet for their cable needs. This article explains the differences and similarities between cable brands and offers suggestions that can help a consumer save money by buying cheap computer cables.

Cheap Cables Do Not Have To Mean Cheap Materials

At one time the quality of a cable's conductive core weighed heavily on the quality of the reception. An example of this was the difference between old style flat antenna cables as compared to modern, RJ-45 cable used in most homes.

These cables were very susceptible to interference and signal degradation, especially over long distances. Modern cables, especially those used in computers, do not have these problems as for the most part, they carry digital signals.

In a digital signal, either the information arrives properly at the receiving end or it doesn't. An excellent cable review by Gizmodo shows that for shorter length computer cables a properly made low cost cable should work just as well as an expensive cable of the same type.

The type of core (gold, tin, copper, etc.) may have some minor influence over transmission speeds but in general one type of cable will work the same as another in most consumer grade applications. Longer length applications (over 25 feet such as is used in home theater installations) seem to be the only exceptions.

Saving Money By Buying Cheap Computer Cables Online

A brand name cable that costs forty dollars in a chain store can often be found in a more generic brand for ten dollars or less at many online retailers. One of many highly respected online retailers that deals in computer and DVI cables is Monoprice. Monoprice sells it's own brand of cables at extremely attractive prices when compared to brand names such as Monster Cable.

The savings on more expensive types such as DVI or HDMI cables are the most significant but standard USB, Firewire, and other types of cables are also available at deep discounts. Monoprice also offers many well reviewed converter boxes that can allow a user to connect their computer directly to their HDTV or other television.

As an added benefit the selection available online is often much better than in a brick and mortar retailer. Many different lengths, core materials, and connector types are available online that are not normally stocked in the stores.
