The rumors of the death of Commodore Computers have been greatly exaggerated. One New notebook will soon be on the market.

Anyone computer enthusiast who grew up during the 1980s remembers the name Commodore.

The computer manufacturer was noted for its quality machines, and until the advent of the Amiga, cheap family systems that were within reasonably priced and powerful for their day. People who think that the days of Commodore computers are over and that they brand name will never return will be surprised to find out that the company is alive and well.

Mark Twain might have something to say on the subject of the death of this beloved former computer company however, if he were asked about them. To paraphrase : it seems that the rumors of Commodore's death have been greatly exaggerated. The company unleashed plan in August of this year to release a new laptop to compete with Dell's Inpiron Mini 9 and Apple's thin book.

The Specs of the New Commodore Laptop

The representatives for whoever owns the brand now are not releasing many details of their new notebook. Not even details of which operating system the net-enabled, extremely portable computer, will run has been released yet.

However, one picture available shows the notebook running a program that looks like the Windows version of the Firefox browser. A speed of 1.6 GHz may not make it the fastest notebook. The current processor made by Via will enable the notebook to run Windows, Linux, Unix, and any programs designed to run on the Pentium architecture.

The new Commodore laptop is designed to compete with the smaller netbooks introduced by Apple and Dell. The new computer's price (reputedly over $600) may keep it from becoming one of the more popular sellers amongst people who do not have nostalgic memories of the brand name or remember all the computer games many members of Geneeration X played on their family's Commodore 64 or 128.

What Operating System?

One of the odd things about the news of the new Commodore laptop was the lack of information on what operating system the device would be installed on the device.

The news of the Commodore brand returning is good news for computer users who have been around for a while and if the prices come down, and new and excellent games are released specifically for the new netbook, Commodore can gain new generations of fans.
