Fun Novelty Gifts For Computer Geeks

USB Powered Gadgets That Make Great Geek Gifts

Nov 24, 2008 Chad Criswell

This list of fun USB powered gifts for computer geeks has something for every price range and for almost every taste.

There are hundreds of USB powered gadgets available that fill the specific needs of the computer user. There are also many dozen that are as funny as they are pointless. When shopping for a fun gift to use as a stocking stuffer or as a practical joke, consider these interesting USB gadgets.

Fun Gift #1: The USB Snowman

This classic USB novelty still gets comments from anyone that sees it. This diminutive desk accessory uses the computer's USB port to power its sinister sweeping eye (available in red or blue). In true homage to another legendary geeky television show the sweeping eye is accompanied by robotic sounds that imitate those of the Cylons on Battlestar Galactica. A perfect gift for any Galactica fan but also a fun gift for almost any computer enthusiast.

Fun Gift #2: The House Plant Twitter Kit

Placing this odd little device into the soil of any common house plant enables the user to keep close tabs on the health of the soil. When the plant needs more water it sends a message to a special Twitter page.

It does the same if the user over-waters the plant as well. Bear in mind that this is a kit however, and comes in pieces that must be soldered together properly. The maker of the kit, Botanicalls, also plans to offer other kits and perhaps fully assembled plant monitors in the future.

That as well as the strange Ethernet cable coming out of the flower pot make this a gift only for extremely geeky gardeners. Not available in brick and mortar stores, the plant monitoring kit is available at geeky online stores such as ThinkGeek.

Fun Gift #3: The USB Ferris Wheel

Just about anything can be made to be powered by a USB connection. As a result a myriad of office toys such as the USB Ferris Wheel have made their way into offices all across the globe. With the USB Ferris Wheel, any time the user types a character it causes the wheel to rotate. The noise from the user's clicking keys will be drowned out by the noise of the Ferris Wheel's motor but this toy is still a fun gift for any computer geek.

While these three suggestions are by no means the definitive list of fun gifts for computer users, these very popular options are sure to get a laugh months or even years after they have been given to that special computer geek on any shopping list.
