Features such as the number and type of inputs and outputs on a computer monitor can have a large effect on price, value, and overall satisfaction.

The best LCD monitor is a cheap LCD monitor, right? Until recently buying a lower priced LCD monitor meant sacrificing features, performance, and screen size. Today LCD prices have dropped so significantly that it is now possible to get a 22 inch screen for less than $300 and still have it be fully equipped with some of the most important features that consumers are looking for.

LCD Monitor Inputs

There was a time when monitor input connections were limited to standard VGA. Today, HDMI and DVI inputs (the computer equivalent of HDMI inputs on a television) are becoming much more prevalent even in lower end monitors. The type of inputs found on an LCD monitor dictates the flexibility and multi-use capabilities of the monitor. Some models have both types of inputs but only accept a signal through one at a time. Others can electronically switch between the two inputs allowing a user to connect a second computer or even a high definition television feed.

For users that require lots of inputs on one single LCD monitor the Asus PG221 is an excellent (although more expensive) option. This model includes inputs for DVI, Composite, and Component video signals as well as a built in 1.3 megapixel web cam and 5 watt stereo speakers.

USB and iPod Connections

While the video inputs on an LCD monitor are of primary importance many computer monitors now come equipped with additional connections to allow a user to connect additional USB devices such as USB capable digital cameras, web cams, or other small devices. The convenience of such inputs lies in having the connections up high on the work surface rather than hidden below the desk on the actual computer.

iPod users will love the latest additions to some LCD monitors. Models such as the Viewsonic VX2245wm (22 inch) or VX1945wm (19 inch) View Dock include built in connectors for iPods allowing the device to connect to the computer through the monitor instead of a separate dock.

Best Values In LCD Monitors

While the big names in monitors are companies such as Samsung and Viewsonic, other companies produce very high quality products at very cheap prices while still providing many of the features discussed previously. Acer is a very popular manufacturer of budget minded LCD monitors, many with DVI and HDMI inputs. Acer products tend to be much less expensive than other brand names while still maintaining high quality components.

Great prices abound for those seeking a good deal on a high performance LCD monitor. While additional features will raise the price of any purchase, the overall quality of today's LCD panels guarantees that almost any monitor purchased from a respected manufacturer will perform well and provide many hours of constructive use.
