Surround sound quality doesn't always take a lot of money to achieve and Zalman has a model that will satisfy people on a budget.

There's no doubt that if you want to buy surround sound quality headphones, the price is going to be much higher than any standard pair. While PC surround speakers are great, PC headphones provide more convenience without a lot of hardware. Zalman's headset provides a virtual 5.1 sound with great quality for a price that won't set anyone back too far.

Sound Quality

It isn't until someone uses surround sound after being using to mono or stereo that they realize the difference. The ZM-RS6F provides a good leap for those who are starting to hear the increase in quality. For more experienced users, the technical specification are as follows:

Unit Type:Electro Dynamic Round Type Micro Speaker

Frequency Response:50Hz ~ 20KHz (Extension Effective)

Sound Pressure Level:89 dB +/- 3 dB at 50mW

Impedance:16 Ohm at 1KHz

Nominal Power: 0.02W

Maximum Power: 0.15W

Weight: 11.24oz (316.8g) without packaging

Cord: Straight, Triple entry 9.8ft (300cm)

Plug: 3 headphone jacks (3.5mm)

The sound quality shows especially in games and movies. Sound effectively travels in true 5.1, and front, center, and rear channels flow through well. While no one should try to go deaf, turning up the volume immerses the user completely in the experience. There is still ambient sound from outside noise, but it doesn't ruin the experience.

Design

The overall design is rather bulky and the headphones are rather heavy. After the first few times, people will be feeling a bit of weight on their head and a cowlick in their hair from the amount of weight from the top strap. Besides this minor complaint, the headphones are actually comfortable on the ears and have padding which is good for prolonged use. The ear pieces cover up the ears completely and make it hard to hear any outside noise when sound is turned up.

One nifty feature is the way it folds into itself. The speakers fold directly under the brace between the two earpieces, effectively shrinking the amount of space they take up. It isn't fantastic, unless a person with a very messy desk needs some more room.

Summary

The quality stands the test of time and there are no technical glitches even after two years of use. The cover on the padding was the first part to rip open, but no other parts of the heaphones have broken or malfunctioned. The price ranges from $40 to $60, which is still cheaper than other high-end surround headphones that can go over $100, and can be found at most online stores.
